How this class gets started

Bachata, opened by a headcount

An adult bachata class in the Black Country is surprisingly hard to track down. Rather than pick a random evening and pray the room fills, we let the people who want it tell us first. Every name on the list counts as a yes, and once there are enough yeses to make a lively floor we hire a room and announce the opening night to everyone waiting.

The fee sits at £9 because nothing else is bolted onto it. You won’t be asked to buy a six-week block, sign up for direct debit or pay a joining fee. You come, you pay for that class, you go home. Skip a fortnight for a holiday or a late shift and there’s nothing to catch up on financially — just walk back in and pick up the rhythm.

Putting your name down doesn’t tie you to anything either. The form asks for your postcode so we can see where the interest is clustered, which matters when people might be travelling from Tipton, Gornal, Halesowen or Kingswinford. We would rather choose a room that suits the whole list than one that suits nobody.

The Bachata list

A few quick boxes. Each bachata name nudges the opening night closer.

Joining the interest list costs nothing; the room gets booked when the numbers add up.

Early weeks on the floor

Where bachata begins

Shaped by the room, week by week

01

The four-count sway

Three steps to the side and a little tap or hip pop on four, repeated until your weight moves without you steering it.

02

The box basic

Forward, back and across on the same count, so you have somewhere to travel when the side step gets a bit samey.

03

Open and closed hold

How to hold a partner at arm’s length or closer in, with plenty of room to choose what feels comfortable for you.

04

A gentle first turn

One simple turn led through the hands, walked at half speed before it ever meets the music.

The teacher reads the room rather than ticking off a syllabus. If everyone has the sway nailed early, the class gets a turn or a bit of styling; if the count is still wobbly, there’s more time spent listening to the guitar and bongo pattern until it clicks. Bachata rewards patience, and there’s no rush to impress anybody.

Partner swaps happen throughout, and nobody is expected to dance closer than they want to. Holds can stay open and relaxed for as long as you like. Because the whole group arrived off the same list, the first night feels like a fresh start for everyone rather than a room of regulars sizing you up.

We don’t sell, lend or hire out shoes, so any pair with a smooth sole that lets you pivot on the ball of your foot will carry you through the first few weeks — leave grippy trainers at home if you can, and bring your own water bottle.

From the list

What got people onto the list

I’d only ever danced bachata on holiday and wanted to learn it properly without driving miles. Adding my name felt like no pressure at all, which is exactly why I did it.

My husband wouldn’t come, so I went by myself. The teacher kept us all swapping round, and I left knowing four people’s names and a turn I couldn’t do an hour earlier.

Bachata questions, answered

Join the list ↑
Is bachata a good first partner dance for total beginners?

It’s one of the kindest ones to start with. The basic pattern is a steady side-to-side count with a tap on four, so there’s very little to remember before you’re actually dancing to a song.

How close do you have to hold a bachata partner?

As close as you’re comfortable with, and no closer. The teacher starts everyone in an open hold at arm’s length, and nobody is asked to move into a closer hold unless both people are happy.

What’s the difference between sensual and traditional bachata here?

The early weeks stick to the shared basics that sit under every style. Once the group has its footing, the teacher may add a little of the smoother, body-led feel, but only at the pace the room can manage.

Will I learn any bachata footwork you can dance solo?

Yes. There’s usually some time spent on footwork and styling on your own, which is handy for practising in the kitchen between classes and builds confidence before partner work.

What happens after I add my name for bachata?

You’re on the list and that’s it for now. Once there are enough names to fill a room, we hire one and contact everybody on the list with the details for the first class.

Can I bring a friend along to a bachata class?

Please do — and ask them to add their own name to the list too, because every extra name helps the class open sooner and helps us choose a sensible location.

Do bachata shoes need suede soles from day one?

No. Shoes you already own with a smooth sole are fine at first. We don’t supply footwear, so bring your own, and ask the teacher about proper dance shoes if you get hooked.

Is there an age limit on the adult bachata class?

There’s no upper limit at all. The class is aimed at adults of any age, beginners included. If you’re asking on behalf of a younger dancer, pick their age band on the form so we know.
