Locally, jazz is mostly a children’s-school subject. This class starts with the adults.

Why the list

Showtime for the grown-ups

Jazz dance is the energetic, theatrical style behind musicals, film numbers and a good share of pop videos. It mixes clean technique — turns, kicks, leaps — with isolations, attitude and sharp musical accents, and it is enormous fun to learn. Around Dudley, though, jazz is mostly offered to children through dance schools, with adults an afterthought if they appear at all.

We are flipping that around. The interest list lets adults put their hands up for jazz specifically. When there are enough names, we hire a room close to where the list lives — whether that is Halesowen, Cradley Heath or Brierley Hill — and the class starts with a floor full of fellow beginners and returners.

Each class is £9, paid on the night. There are no terms, no end-of-year shows to rehearse for and no memberships. You come when you can, enjoy it while you’re there, and the teacher keeps a loose thread running between classes so a missed week never leaves you completely lost.

Early jazz classes

Kicks, turns and a lot of personality

Shaped by the room, week by week

01

Isolations

Moving the head, ribs and hips one at a time, which trains control and gives jazz its crisp, stylish look.

02

Jazz walks and struts

Low, travelling walks with a bit of swagger — the quickest route into feeling like you are in a musical.

03

Kicks and turns

Kick-ball-changes, pivot turns and a first pirouette, broken down so everybody can have a go safely.

04

A short combination

Steps strung together to a jazzy track, grown week by week as the room becomes more confident.

The teacher chooses the music and pitches each session to the group. Some classes lean towards classic musical-theatre jazz, with a nod to the Fosse style of turned-in knees and hat-brim hands; others lean towards a modern, commercial feel. Either way, there’s technique to learn, a combination to enjoy and no fixed script.

You don’t need flexibility, a dance background or a sequinned leotard. Jazz rewards energy and personality, so the most important thing to bring is a willingness to be a bit theatrical. Returners who danced as children usually find it comes flooding back, and newcomers soon catch up.

What brought people to jazz

I did jazz until I was fourteen and then nothing for twenty-five years. A class meant for adults is exactly the nudge I needed.

Jazz class questions

Does jazz dance mean dancing to big-band jazz records?

Not quite. Jazz dance is a theatrical style seen in musicals and on stage, and it is danced to all sorts of music, including pop and show tunes, not only swing or big-band jazz.

What footwear do adults wear for jazz dance?

Jazz shoes are ideal, but socks or clean, flexible trainers work fine at first. Footwear isn’t sold or lent on the night, so arrive in your own.

Will the jazz class include musical theatre numbers?

Often, yes. The teacher might set a combination to a show tune one week and to a pop track the next, so you get a taste of both.

How high do the jazz kicks need to go?

No. Kicks are taught at whatever height your body allows, and flexibility improves as the weeks go by. Control matters more than height.

What is Fosse style and will we try it?

Fosse is a famous jazz style known for turned-in knees, rolled shoulders and sharp, minimal movements. The teacher may bring in elements of it as the class progresses.

I did jazz as a child — can I come back to it now?

Definitely. Returners are welcome, and the teacher will give you extra challenges while beginners work on the basics.

Will we perform the jazz routine in a show?

No shows or recitals. The combination is learnt for its own sake; if you want a video of it at the end, you can film it for yourself.

Is jazz dance a good workout for adults?

Yes. It works legs, core and stamina, and the isolations improve coordination and posture. It is energetic, but you can always take it at your own pace.
