Bollywood night, voted in by Dudley
Finding a regular grown-up Bollywood class around the Black Country can feel like hunting for a needle in a haystack. So instead of guessing, we ask. Anyone who would come puts their name down, and when the list is healthy enough to fill a room with energy, we hire one and get the music going.
The list also tells us where people are. Postcodes from Cradley Heath, Wednesbury, Brierley Hill and around Dudley town help us pick a room that’s easy for the most people to reach, rather than one that’s handy for us. Signing up is free and doesn’t commit you to turning up.
When the class is running, each visit costs £9 and you pay on the night. No six-week course to buy in advance, no membership and nothing that expires if you’re away for a wedding season. Come when you can, dance your heart out, go home buzzing.
Bollywood from the ground up
Shaped by the room, week by week
Hand gestures
The expressive mudra-inspired hand shapes that tell the story of a song, taught one by one until they flow.
Shoulder and bhangra bounce
Lively Punjabi-style bounces and shoulder shrugs that bring the energy up in a heartbeat.
Travelling steps
Neat footwork patterns that carry you across the floor without losing the beat or your balance.
Filmi flourishes
Dramatic spins, pauses and poses borrowed from the big screen, added once the basics feel secure.
The teacher picks tracks and moves to suit the group in front of them, from classic film numbers to newer hits. Some weeks focus on the graceful, classical-influenced side; others are pure bhangra fun. Short combinations get stitched together gradually, and there’s no set choreography you’re expected to have memorised by a deadline.
It’s joyful, loud and very forgiving. Mistakes are hidden by enthusiasm, and the group tends to cheer each other on. Because everybody arrived from the list at once, there’s no established troupe to keep up with — just a room of people discovering they can dance like they’re in a film.

Why people signed up for Bollywood
I grew up watching these films with my nan and always wanted to learn the dances properly. Having a class that forms from local interest meant it wasn’t miles away.
I’d never done any Bollywood before and don’t know a word of Hindi. None of that mattered. I sweated buckets and couldn’t stop smiling all evening.
Do Bollywood beginners need to understand the song lyrics?
No. The teacher explains what the key gestures mean, which is part of the fun, but you don’t need any language skills to follow the moves and enjoy the music.
Is Bollywood the same thing as bhangra dancing?
They overlap but aren’t identical. Bhangra is a Punjabi folk style full of bounce, while Bollywood blends many influences from Indian cinema. This class borrows from both, depending on the track.
Which Bollywood songs will the teacher use in class?
It varies with the group. Expect a mix of well-loved film classics and newer hits, chosen on the night to match the moves being taught rather than following a fixed playlist.
Is Bollywood tiring for someone who isn’t very fit?
It’s energetic, but you can go at your own pace and take breaks whenever you need. Fitness builds naturally as the weeks go by, and nobody is judged for stepping out for a breather.
Could I wear traditional clothes to a Bollywood class?
You’re welcome to if you like, but it’s not expected — anything loose enough to twirl and bend in will do the job. We don’t supply outfits, so whatever you wear is your own choice.
Does my family background matter if I join Bollywood?
Not one bit. Everyone is welcome, whatever their heritage. The class is about the joy of the music and the moves, and the room is richer for having a real mix of people.
How do I find out when the Bollywood class starts?
Keep an eye on your inbox. When the list is long enough to justify hiring a room, we book one and send the details to everybody who signed up. Until then, being on it is all you need to do.
Could I learn Bollywood moves ready for a family wedding?
The weekly class will give you confidence and a good bank of moves for any celebration. For a specific wedding routine with a set song, a private session is the better route.
